Today with MELVAS CATS Since my original cats have slipped away to Rainbow Bridge, fate has sent several older cats to join me for their final months and years. I achieved part of my dreams with a Russian White, Champion Yaralin Sjtsjoekin, who sadly left me in January 2008. Sugarlump was born in Australia, and had gone to live with Ingrid Nuyten in the Netherlands in 1993. He flew to the UK in 2001, followed by one of his ex-wives in 2003.
In October 2003, when all necessary documents and vaccinations were complete, Ingrid travelled to Calais and then over to Dover with Tiju. We exchanged cat carriers and I came home with a beautiful Russian Blue. . Shortly after, Sugarlump and Tiju met again for the first time for two years - they kissed, sniffed bottoms and curled up together. They slept together, ate together and played together again for 5 years. Sadly, she misses him as much as I do.
Before he left his first home, they were visited by the Russian born photographers, Anatoli Krassavine and Valentina Koulagina of PhotoCat who took some wonderful pictures as you can see from these.
As he is a few grains of my Sugarlump, my kitten is called is the Russian word for 'sugar' - and Sashar is as soft and sweet as his name, just like his dad. Catwo Sashar is gentle, quietly talkative and has livened up my geriatric household of cats. And that really was only water in the glass with the Vodka bottle!
I still have my lovely Russian Blue girl, Furbell Cornflower. She was born on 23 May 1990 and joined me in May 1999 with her cousin Furbell Lavender Blue, who left us with many happy memories. Dolly is a proper softie, though she adores food almost as much as she loves me. Sadly her hearing has deteriorated in her old age and she can no longer hear tins being opened, though is the best meal time-keeper I know. Dolly keeps very fit for her age of 18 and loves beds on top of cupboards or radiators.
Mitten joined me with a Sealpoint Birman, Elisheba Applejack, who due to his poor health did not continue on to a planned home, but they both stayed with me She has the sleekest short black coat I have ever seen with white mittens, chest and moustache. Mitten is rather shy and had obviously been through a lot in her 21 years. She used to love being outside in my garden, but is now happy to stay indoors.
So, in 2008, I have one breed of cat: And time still moves on
